Internships

Employers are interested in hiring our MBA students as interns because of the specific skills, talents and enthusiasm that they bring to the workplace. Because of their unique backgrounds and experiences, MBA student interns have been involved in a wide variety of duties, responsibilities and projects at many different types of organizations. Regardless of the nature of the organization and the projects/duties performed on the internship, MBA student interns almost uniformly praise the quality of their internship experiences.

If you are an employer and wish to learn more about employing an MBA student as an intern, please visit our employer internship page.

What should MBA students do to obtain an internship and receive internship credit?

There are two paths to obtaining an internship:

  • The first is to find an internship opportunity and have it approved by one of the internship coordinators.
  • The second approach is to apply for internship opportunities available through the management, marketing, finance or accounting internship office.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 12 credits in the core MBA courses
  • Taken the MBA core course in the area of the internship
  • A cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.2 or higher (out of 4.0)

After finding an internship:

  • Meet with an internship coordinator to learn about the requirements for receiving internship credit.
  • In order to receive 3 credits you must complete a minimum of 180 contact hours in your internship.
  • There is no maximum number of hours, you may even work full time during the summer.
  • After completion an internship will count as an elective course in the MBA program.
One source of information on internship and career opportunities is the eRecruiting.com Website. Students are encouraged to post their resumes and cover letters there, allowing potential employers to search for qualified candidates.

About Foreign Students as MBA Interns:

A number of MBA's are international students, who bring a wealth of diverse experience to the area through a variety of internship and employment options. A quality support network at Illinois State assists in processing the necessary employment paperwork with the Immigration and Naturalization Service, allowing them to obtain work permission quite readily in most cases.
